Rediscovering Your True Self: A Journey to Authenticity

It breaks my heart to see how many people go through life without a true sense of self, constantly adapting to everyone else’s needs and expectations.

But I totally get it.

For most of my life, I viewed myself through the lens of who I thought I should be. I guided my life based on who I believed the world wanted me to be and, honestly, I burned myself out chasing goals that weren’t even mine because I didn’t know who I was or how to connect with my true self.

This experience is so common. Many of us spend years disconnected from our true selves, identified instead with our conditioned personas—the masks we wear to fit in and be accepted.

These personas are shaped by our experiences, traumas, and the messages we've internalized about who we should be. While these personas serve a purpose, they can also keep us disconnected from our true essence.

Instead of following our true path, we pour our energy into achieving, performing, and perfecting, all while being caught in a whirlwind of expectations: society’s, our family’s, and even our own misguided notions of success and worthiness.

Deep inside, this leaves us feeling dissatisfied, disconnected, and like we’re just going through the motions.

The Cost of Disconnection

Living disconnected from our true selves isn't just emotionally exhausting; it impacts our bodies as well. Our nervous system responds to this disconnection with stress, tension, and dysregulation. We might experience chronic stress, anxiety, or a feeling of being perpetually on edge. Or we may feel as if we don’t even know who we are or what we want in life.

Our bodies hold the unprocessed emotions and unresolved traumas that keep us in a state of disconnection.

But there is a way back. Reconnecting with your true self is a beautiful, transformative journey that begins with a commitment to self-discovery and self-compassion. It's about getting quiet within, listening deeply, and reconnecting to the true essence of who we are.

Beneath the Surface: Your True Self

Underneath all of these layers of societal programming and conditioned beliefs lies our true essence and authentic inner knowing. No matter how long it’s been buried, it’s still within us, calling us to lives of greater meaning, authenticity, and contentment.

This true self, often referred to as the capital 'S' Self in Internal Family Systems (IFS) as developed by Dr. Dick Schwartz, is the core of our being. It's the part of us that embodies the 8 Cs: confidence, compassion, clarity, calm, courage, creativity, connectedness, and curiosity.

And at this time of year, when people are making all sorts of resolutions, goals, and intentions, it’s more important than ever to check in with our true selves to make sure we’re guiding our lives toward paths that will feed our hearts and souls instead of just aiming for the same empty accomplishments society has convinced us are important.

The Journey to Reconnect With Your True Self

The journey to reconnect with your true self is not a linear path but a somatic and emotional unfolding. It requires us to tune into our bodies, listen to the whispers of our hearts, and embrace the parts of ourselves we've neglected or rejected.

I’m offering a two-part somatic meditation series to help you reconnect with your true self. These meditations are designed to help you tap into your authentic essence and guide you toward a life that truly resonates with who you are.

In doing so, you'll not only transform your own life but also radiate a light that inspires and uplifts those around you.
